Exhibit 1.3: Aligning curriculum with state and district standards

Title of Exhibit
STU Goals Toward Curriculum Change
Domain Outcome #(1.0)
Candidates are proficient in curriculum development and implementation; knowledge of curriculum and subject matter is used to create positive change in classrooms, schools, and districts.
M.Ed. Domain Indicator #(1.3)
The candidate aligns curricula with state and district standards when planning effective instruction that includes literacy and critical thinking skills
Rationale
I demonstrate proficiency in curriculum development and implementation by using the Showcase Teaching Unit goals chart to ensure coverage of key curriculum concepts and skills to create positive change in the classroom, school, and school system. Ancess and Darling-Hammond state: “The most effective instruction takes place when teachers actively participate in the school decision-making process, including instructional program design, curriculum development . . .” (Ancess, Darling-Hammond, and Columbia University, 1994, p. 8)
Self-Evaluation and Reflection

The STU Goals chart helped to crystallize a range of foci that enabled clear teaching of key curricular concepts in the Odyssey. I arrived at clear, enduring understandings as a result of analyzing the student standards I chose for this unit. Subsequently, students developed a much clearer vision of their purpose for learning the content delivered to them, and the ways in which they can uncover additional content knowledge.
