Exhibit 3.2: Maintains and communicates student progress using technology
Title of Exhibit
Exhibit 3.2 Electronic Gradebook
Domain Outcome #(3.0)
Candidates manage the classroom learning environment to create success for all students.
M.Ed. Domain Indicator #(3.2)
The candidate maintains, interprets, and communicates records of student progress knowledgeably and responsibly, using the latest available technology.
Rationale
I demonstrate proficiency in maintaining, interpreting and communicating records of student progress knowledgeably and responsibly, using the latest available technology by using the SMS Chancery Gradebook program and Microsoft Excel. Gradebook provides at-a-glance monitoring of student scoring trends, and creates reports that track student assignment progress. I can quickly evaluate student learning in particular areas by looking at class averages and individual student progress. In so doing, I can pinpoint areas where I may need to take a different curricular and instructional approach. The artifacts listed above show that I have used technology to assess learning and design changes to curriculum and instruction based on the assessment. Palozzi and Spradlin (2006) address the need for teachers to use technology in communicating student progress by pointing out that parents increasingly rely on electronic communication with schools so that they can remain current on their children’s curriculum. They go on to state that grading and data management software can streamline teachers’ record keeping.
Self-Evaluation and Reflection
I have observed that students are more motivated to learn when there is clear communication of their progress. Parents are also very appreciative of this communication, and their involvement promotes student success. As I continue to use SMS Gradebook and Excel in tracking student progress, I notice that I am more motivated to address student learning issues because I can focus my efforts more effectively.
How verified
Jim Multra, fellow instructor and chair of the Social Studies Task Force has verified the implementation of latest available technology.
