Exhibit 2.1: Mastery of a variety of resources and methods
Domain Outcome #(2.0)
Candidates are proficient in the knowledge, dispositions, and skills needed for effective teaching; effective teaching results in successful student learning.
M.Ed. Domain Indicator #(2.1)
The candidate demonstrates instructional leadership through mastery of a variety of resources, strategies, and teaching methods that are used effectively in P-12 classrooms.
Rationale
I demonstrate proficiency in instructional leadership through the development and implementation of lessons that show mastery of a variety of resources, strategies, and teaching methods in the 9th Grade Literature classroom. This is demonstrated by the use of online and text-based resources, established cultural knowledge, the Six Facets of Understanding, and different models of instruction (concept teaching, problem-solving, cooperative learning, etc) to help students understand and analyze the use of recurring themes in literature. Arends (2007) describes the practice of teaching as a profession that must rely on mastery of subject material, along with techniques that have been scientifically proven effective, such as those described above.
Self-Evaluation and Reflection
Development of the Showcase Teaching Unit has encouraged me to implement a greater range of resources, approaches, and practices in my teaching. Students seem to respond to this variety with greater levels of engagement, and students who generally perform poorly have also responded positively to the increased variety.
