Exhibit 4.3: Models legal and ethical principles
Title of Exhibit
Legal and Ethical Principles at MAK
Domain Outcome #(4.0)
Candidates manage their continued learning and professional development through continuous reflection about their teaching knowledge, dispositions, skills, and practices.
M.Ed. Domain Indicator #(4.3)
The candidate models legal and ethical principles of the education profession.
Rationale
I demonstrate continued learning and professional development through the modeling of legal and ethical principles, demonstrated by practicing accountability between myself and another teacher in the communication of standards in the classroom, and through obtaining consent from parents for their children to appear in a video. As Greene (1998) notes, teachers are required by U.S. courts to act with the highest care toward students, because of the special skills and training required to be a teacher. This includes a mandate, I believe, to act ethically, which would include an accountability relationship with a mentor for completing required staff activities.
Self-Evaluation and Reflection
Being accountable to other teachers has helped me maintain my own professionalism, but has also helped me be more in community with my colleagues. Contact with parents in the context of the video has also opened doors of communication, and is one step toward fostering more community.
