Exhibit 3.d: Respect for diverse needs and sensitivity to community values

Title of Exhibit
Community Values in Taiwan: How Missions Impact the Local Community
Domain Outcome #(3.0)
Candidates manage the classroom learning environment to create success for all students.
M.Ed. Domain Indicator #(3.d)
The candidate manages the P-12 learning environment by evaluating this country's multicultural perspectives within a larger context of global issues and worldviews in an effort to create success for all students.
Rationale
I demonstrate proficiency in managing the classroom learning environment to create success for all students by inviting a mission-oriented individual from the community to describe the impact of church outreach to the local population of foreign workers, providing a multicultural perspective in the context of global issues and worldviews. Activation of students’ cultural knowledge is a critical component of increased engagement and student learning. Munns and Woodward (2006) describe an effective classroom as one where intellectual quality is achieved through activities that draw on student knowledge of culture and real-life settings.
Self-Evaluation and Reflection
I was very pleased with the student response to Mr. Owen’s presentation. Though many students are Christian and thus were predisposed to appreciate the presentation, many students are not Christian, and have perhaps had a one-sided view of mission work in Taiwan. Mr. Owen discussed the lessons learned in cultural sensitivity from studying mission history. Students were able to make connections between Catholic mission work of the Renaissance and post-Reformation, and today’s mission ideals specific to Taiwan.
