Exhibit 4.d: Using students reflections to make adaptation in teaching practices
Title of Exhibit
Cultural Considerations in Designing Learning Environments
Domain Outcome #(4.0)
Candidates manage their continued learning and professional development through continuous reflection about their teaching knowledge, dispositions, skills, and practices.
M.Ed. Domain Indicator #(4.d)
The candidate analyses cultural considerations and reflections of P-12 students and their families when designing learning environments so as to maximize the socialization role of schools and classroom teachers for diverse cultural groups.
Rationale
I demonstrate proficiency in analyzing cultural considerations and reflections of students and parents from diverse cultures by soliciting input from parents and students regarding the creation of a Taiwan bulletin board display within the classroom, and inviting parents to speak on elements that reflect the cultural considerations of students and their families. Zhao (2008) describes schools as having a primary responsibility for socialization in the context of cultural consideration and parent involvement, as the phenomenon of globalization continues to diversify school cultural makeup and influence the requirements of the workplace.
Self-Evaluation and Reflection
Student interest in the Taiwan bulletin board was high, and I look forward to expanding it. Parent involvement has been less apparent, though some parents have responded to surveys to express a desire to be involved in class presentations on cultural awareness.
