Exhibit 5.2: Mentor accountability for improvement

Title of Exhibit
Mentoring and Accountability Relationships
Domain Outcome #(5.0)
Candidates create professional partnerships to create learning opportunities for themselves and their students.
M.Ed. Domain Indicator #(5.2)
The candidate establishes mentor and accountability relationships with peers for instructional improvement.
Rationale

This exhibit demonstrates my proficiency at establishing mentor and accountability relationships with my peers for instructional improvement. By serving as an accountability partner to fellow teachers, specifically regarding explicit presentation of benchmarks to students, I am entering into a mentor relationship. I also am involved in the curriculum mapping process, which necessitates a mentoring relationship with fellow teachers as we streamline the school's curriculum. I am mentored by other teachers in my content area through their suggestions and advice regarding the implementation of the curriculum. As Darling-Hammond states, “Teachers who have had good mentors are more likely to stay in teaching and become competent teachers” (as cited in Gardner, 2006).

Self-Evaluation and Reflection

I have noticed that whenever I observe other teachers, I feel that I come away more enriched than does the teacher whom I have observed. Engaging in a mentoring, accountability relationship also helps me feel more connected to my colleagues, resulting in a more open, collegial and academically challenging climate. I find myself more willing to try new things when I see my fellow teachers’ techniques on display, and when we discuss new techniques or ideas in conference.
