Exhibit 3.3: Promotes social interaction
Title of Exhibit
Classroom Social Interaction Management
Domain Outcome #(3.0)
Candidates manage the classroom learning environment to create success for all students.
M.Ed. Domain Indicator #(3.3)
The candidate promotes positive social interactions, peer relationships, and personal self-control in all aspects of the P-12 learning environment.
Rationale
I demonstrate proficiency in managing the classroom learning environment by providing students a structure in which to frame their interaction and behavior, as evidenced by formal observations. That structure includes opportunities for academic interaction where students are supportive, but also offer constructive criticism, resulting in positive social interaction and positive peer relationships. There is also a library behavior framework I designed for our reading time in the library every Friday. Pedota (2007) describes effective teachers as ones who have superior classroom management skills, resulting in the highest amount of instructional time.
Self-Evaluation and Reflection
The point system I put in place this year has demonstrated to me that students are indeed capable of controlling themselves. I also noticed that when students are not reminded periodically of the framework for proper academic interaction, the quality of both social and academic interaction goes down. I now provide a reminder of proper behavior at the beginning of each session of peer review or performance, and tie that framework to the overall grade a student receives.
