Exhibit 5.1: Action research for curriculum assessment and learning environment
Title of Exhibit
Action Research in Cultural Relevancy
Domain Outcome #(5.0)
Candidates create professional partnerships to create learning opportunities for themselves and their students.
M.Ed. Domain Indicator #(5.1)
The candidate conducts active classroom research; he/she collaborates with other professional educators and students to improve curriculum, assessment, and instruction in the P-12 learning environment.
Rationale
I demonstrate proficiency in creating professional partnerships to create learning opportunities for students by collaborating with other professional educators to improve instruction through the use of action research in the classroom. The Center for Comprehensive School Reform and Improvement (“Maximizing the Impact,” 2007) describes effective collaboration as inclusive of both individual and mutual reflection about what has been learned in observing classroom instruction.
Self-Evaluation and Reflection
Although the action research in my classroom involved mostly students, I found that soliciting comments from colleagues opened up new opportunities for teaching across the curriculum that I might not have been aware of otherwise. Sharing my research may also have generated an interest in teaching in a culturally relevant manner.
How verified
This exhibit was verified by Jim Multra, 8th Grade Humanities instructor at Morrison Academy Kaohsiung.
