Exhibit 5.4: Knowledge of current and historical models of schooling

Title of Exhibit
Professional Practice in Current and Historical Models of Schooling.
Domain Outcome #(5.0)
Candidates create professional partnerships to create learning opportunities for themselves and their students.
M.Ed. Domain Indicator #(5.4)
The candidate demonstrates knowledge of the advantages and disadvantages of current and historical model of schooling.
Rationale
I demonstrate knowledge of the advantages and disadvantages of current and historical models of schooling through reflection on my own professional practice, and creation of a plan to address issues uncovered by those reflections, specifically in the areas of giftedness and cultural relevance, dealt with respectively in the attached essays. Education cannot be a system of philosophical extremes. Pogrow (2006) describes education as swinging between progressivism and traditionalism, while it should be reaping the real benefits of both approaches, combined.
Self-Evaluation and Reflection
Reflecting on my practice has helped me see where I stand on the continuum between traditional and progressive modes of schooling. By analyzing the effectiveness of different modes, I am gaining deeper skill in combining techniques and thinking from across that continuum, and I believe this is making me a more effective educator.
