Exhibit 1.5: Respect for cultural values and democratic principles
Title of Exhibit
Promoting American and Taiwanese Cultural Values and Democratic Principles in the Classroom
Domain Outcome #(1.0)
Candidates are proficient in curriculum development and implementation; knowledge of curriculum and subject matter is used to create positive change in classrooms, schools, and districts.
M.Ed. Domain Indicator #(1.5)
The candidate shows appreciation for and implements a well-rounded education based on high but realistic expectations that demonstrate respect for cultural values and democratic principles.
Rationale
I demonstrate proficiency in curriculum development and implementation by incorporating and activating previous student learning in the area of Taiwanese culture, while using curriculum-specified materials such as the Language of Literature to uphold cultural diversity and democratic values to create positive change in classroom, school, and school system. Rothwell (2005) notes that successful teaching requires democratic methods and ethnographic principles in interactions with students.
Self-Evaluation and Reflection
While implementing materials and lessons that have key cultural relevance to my students, particularly with the Snakes of Taiwan project and the values of democracy (especially vis á vis the Taiwan-China issue), I found students to be much more engaged and focused on the lesson and subsequent class discussion.
How verified
this exhibit was observed and verified by Jim Multra, humanities instructor at MAK.
