Exhibit 1.4: Interdisciplinary learning activities

Title of Exhibit
Interdisciplinary Studies
Domain Outcome #(1.0)
Candidates are proficient in curriculum development and implementation; knowledge of curriculum and subject matter is used to create positive change in classrooms, schools, and districts.
M.Ed. Domain Indicator #(1.4)
The candidate creates interdisciplinary learning activities that enable students to integrate knowledge and methods of inquiry from different subject areas.
Rationale

I demonstrate proficiency in creating interdisciplinary learning activities that enable students to integrate knowledge and methods of inquiry from different subject areas (Language Arts, History and Technology) by requiring strong language and speech skills in the presentation of historical materials using Microsoft Powerpoint. As Gardner, Wissick, Schweder, Windy, Canter, and Smith note, “This approach integrates knowledge from different disciplines and encourages students to explore topics deeply, reading many different sources and engaging in a variety of activities” (2003).

Self-Evaluation and Reflection
Creating interdisciplinary activities helped me think of student learning as an interconnected process, so that I was more conscious of what sort of tasks I was asking students to perform. This helped me to think in terms of students' ZPD rather than simply what content I needed to cover. I noticed deeper thinking amongst the students as well, as they sought to do justice to a historical period by effectively using technology and language. I was also happy to be able to take two grades from one assessment.
How verified
