Exhibit 4.2: Reflection and self-analysis in professional development

Title of Exhibit
Professional Reflection and Lesson Modification
Domain Outcome #(4.0)
Candidates manage their continued learning and professional development through continuous reflection about their teaching knowledge, dispositions, skills, and practices.
M.Ed. Domain Indicator #(4.2)
The candidate is committed to reflection and self-analysis resulting in continuous professional development.
Rationale
This exhibit demonstrates my proficiency in managing continued learning and professional development through continuous reflection about teaching knowledge, dispositions, skills, and practices. By creating a classroom audit of teaching and learning methods, a classroom materials list, and an adaptations chart, I have demonstrated reflection, self-analysis, and lesson modification as described in Domain Indicator 4.2. Wiggins and McTighe (2005) make the important point that teachers who are willing to commit to professional development will not only learn new techniques, but will also discover their use of techniques that don’t work. In order to improve, the teacher must be willing to take the risk of exposure.
Self-Evaluation and Reflection
Creating the classroom audit helped raise my awareness of the common techniques I fall back on in my teaching. It serves as an excellent starting point for venturing into new, potentially more effective territory. Creating the classroom materials list also proved effective in developing a deeper appreciation of the tools at my disposal, and in understanding the effect the presence of those materials has on students. This appreciation will help me to see new, more powerful ways to use the tools I have been given.
