Exhibit 4.4: Formation of basic values as a foundation for future success

Title of Exhibit
Formation of Basic Values through Biblical Worldview Integration
Domain Outcome #(4.0)
Candidates manage their continued learning and professional development through continuous reflection about their teaching knowledge, dispositions, skills, and practices.
M.Ed. Domain Indicator #(4.4)
The candidate actively encourages the formation of basic values in P-12 students as a foundation for future success in adulthood.
Rationale
I demonstrate continued learning and professional development through the implementation of biblical worldview integration lessons that encourage the formation of basic values in P-12 students. This biblical worldview integration lesson helps students to discern between justice, vengeance and forgiveness, and how they themselves have reacted to these sorts of stimuli in the past. Overman and Overman (2005) states that because even Christians can easily lose sight of the Biblical principles we should be using to guide our lives, it is important that the foundations of biblical thought (a biblical worldview) be expressed anew in the classroom.
Self-Evaluation and Reflection
This lesson was interesting to teach, because students were particularly engaged with the Odyssey, the literary piece through which this lesson was taught. Most students enthusiastically agreed that Odysseus had to slaughter the suitors that were trying to gain his kingdom, so they were primed to look at this portion of the story through a biblical lens, owing to the school environment of sensitivity to biblical standards. Students became more thoughtful about their own characters as a result of the lesson.
