Exhibit 2.2: Positive learning climate with self-directed learning

Title of Exhibit
Instructional Effectiveness Through Positive Environment and Student Responsibility
Domain Outcome #(2.0)
Candidates are proficient in the knowledge, dispositions, and skills needed for effective teaching; effective teaching results in successful student learning.
M.Ed. Domain Indicator #(2.2)
The candidate cultivates an inviting, positive learning climate where P-12 students are actively engaged and demonstrate responsibility for self-directed learning.
Rationale
I demonstrate proficiency in the knowledge, dispositions, and skills needed for effective teaching by utilizing strategies such as a point system and free reading time (a contractual agreement between students and me) that cultivate an inviting, positive learning environment where students take responsibility for self-directed learning. Wong and Wong (2004) point out that students desire boundaries, and that it makes them feel secure and more willing to learn. Ivey and Fisher (2005) note that in regards to developing readers, students must be given opportunities to make choices in their reading so that they read material they find more meaningful. It is that self-directedness that allows for more motivated study.
Self-Evaluation and Reflection
After implementing a system whereby students can gain points toward a free day, I noticed that students were motivated to maintain appropriate class behavior, and were also motivated to encourage others to maintain appropriate behavior. This has extended itself into the self-directed reading time, when students are free to fulfill the terms of their quarterly reading contract. Students now demonstrate more responsibility than in previous class groups I have taught.
